Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Pointers Rally and Nearly Upset Ranked Trine on the Road

ANGOLA, Ind. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (4-3) missed a runner with three seconds remaining to come up just short of an upset at No. 19 Trine (7-0) on Saturday. The Pointers trailed by as much as 15 points in the second half and almost rallied for the win.

Josiah Butler (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) led all players with 25 points, his third game this season with 20 or more and a season high. Malik Abdul-Wahid (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) added 22, also a season-high. Cal Krohn (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) had a double-double, the first of his career, with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Abdul-Wahid hit a jumper a little over five minutes into the game to give the Pointers an 8-7 lead. On the next offensive trip, he hit a three to put UWSP ahead 11-9. He nailed another three with just over five minutes left. Butler hit from behind the arc late, but the Pointers trailed by a 42-32 score at the half.

Krohn cut the deficit to single digits in the opening minute of the second half. The Thunder built a 15-point lead with 13:13 remaining and UWSP began to chip away.

Krohn, Jake Buchanan (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly), Abdul-Wahid and Logan Baumgartner (Medford, Wis./Medford) each made buckets in an 8-0 run. Butler drilled consecutive threes as the Pointers got within four at 67-63. Butler nailed another three and followed up with layup to cut the deficit to a single possession with just over four minutes to go.

Seth Miron (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) hit a jumper to tie the game at 72-72. He made a layup on the next possession to knot the game at 74-74. Butler tied the game at 76-all in the final minute. Trine hit a three with 35 second left and Abdul-Wahid made a pair of free throws to set up a one-possession finish. Miron put up a jumper in the lane with three seconds left and it bounced out as the rally fell short in the end.
