STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (9-0) pulled ahead 18-6 after one en route to a 72-42 home win over Lawrence (8-5) on Thursday in matinee action.
Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) led all scorers with 15 points, 13 of which came in the decisive first half. She drained three three-pointers on the day.
Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) was also in double figures with 10 points. Krueger,
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) and
Rachel Hagen (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) all tied for a game-high eight rebounds each. UWSP scored 40 points in the paint in the win.
Krueger,
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) and Pfeifer each scored on UWSP's first three possessions for a 6-0 lead. Pfeifer then scored five-straight as the lead grew to 11-2.
Emily Mortenson (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) nailed a three and UWSP held an 18-6 edge after one.
Pfeifer drilled threes for UWSP's first two field goals of the second quarter and
Abbie Campion (Janesville, Wis./Milton) hit a triple of her own for a 32-10 lead. Krueger added four points and UWSP was ahead 34-16 at the half.
Josie Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) scored the first basket of the second half to push the lead to 20. Gawlitta, Hagen and Krueger all made field goals as the score favored the Pointers, 52-29, after three.
Thomson and Campion had four points each in the fourth quarter.
Katelyn Slowik (Elcho, Wis./Elcho) scored the final six points of the game to complete the win.
The Pointers travel to Florida to close out non-conference play at the St. Pete Classic. UWSP faces Grinnell on Dec. 29 at 5:00 p.m. ET and concludes the non-conference slate on Dec. 30 at 7:00 p.m. ET versus Suffolk.
