ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (10-0) kept its unbeaten season start intact with 67-48 win over Grinnell (7-4) on the opening day of the St. Pete Classic.
Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) led the Pointers with 11 points.
Kelly McIntyre (Waukesha, Wis./North) added a season-high nine.
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) led UWSP with 10 rebounds.
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) put the Pointers ahead with the first bucket of the game. Pfeifer drilled a three to tie the game at 6-6 midway through the first quarter.
Rachel Hagen (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) hit a bucket and
Emily Mortenson (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) nailed a triple as UWSP led 11-7.
Abbie Campion (Janesville, Wis./Milton) made a layup to give UWSP a 15-13 lead after one.
Mortenson buried another three as UWSP took a 24-22 at midpoint of the second quarter. Campion completed an and-one and hit another jumper after a three by Pfeifer. Hagen capped the half with a layup and UWSP was ahead 34-27 at the break.
Josie Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) hit consecutive layups to open the second half as the lead hit double digits, 38-27.
Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) scored four straight and Thomson made a layup as UWSP ended the third on a 6-0 run to take a 50-37 advantage to the fourth.
Pfiefer hit again from behind the arc to begin the fourth. McIntyre drained a three as well just past the middle of the fourth as the lead reached 61-43.
Lily Truchon (Herbster, Wis./South Shore) made a layup in the closing seconds as the Pointers ended the game on a 6-0 run.
The Pointers close out non-conference play on Saturday (Dec. 30) at 7:00 p.m. ET against Suffolk to close out the St. Pete Classic.
