Pointers Hand Yellowjackets First Loss, Win 33rd-Straight in Series

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (4-2) rallied in the second half to hand UW-Superior (5-1) a 58-53 defeat, the Yellowjackets' first loss of the season. It was the 33rd-consecutive time in the series that UWSP has beaten UW-Superior.
 
Ryan Genrich (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) posted a season-high 14 points to lead the Pointers. Malik Abdul-Wahid (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) and Josiah Butler (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) were also in double figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Seth Miron (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) led UWSP with nine rebounds.
 
Abdul-Wahid had four early points, including a dunk, as UWSP played from behind out of the gate. Butler completed an and-one and Josiah Gillie (Milwaukee, Wis./West Allis) hit a jumper to tie the game at 15-15.
 
Genrich buried a three to halt a 5-0 run by UWS. Miron capped a 7-0 UWSP run with a dunk as the Pointers took their first lead at 22-20. Darrius Bolden (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) completed an and-one for a 27-26 edge, but a 10-4 run by UWS put the Pointers in a 36-31 hole at the break.
 
Cal Krohn (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) hit the first bucket of the second half for UWSP. With 15:27 remaining, Bolden hit a jumper setting off a 15-0 by the Pointers. Abdul-Wahid and Genrich had four points apiece and Butler had the final five in the run.
 
Abdul-Wahid had another dunk with 6:49 to go. He hit another bucket late and UWSP held off the Yellowjackets to pick up the road win.
 
UWSP's road swing concludes on Saturday (Dec. 9) at Trine. Tip-off in Angola, Ind., is set for 3:00 p.m. ET.
