STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 14 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (4-2-0, 1-0-0) won the conference opener by handing No. 6 UW-Eau Claire (3-1-1, 0-1-0) its first defeat of the season, 5-3, on Tuesday night at K.B. Willett Arena.
David Hill (Glen Mills, Pa.) gave the Pointers a 1-0 lead at 3:24 of the first period.
Brett Humberstone (Kingston, Ont.) notched the assist on the goal.
UWEC tied the game at 11:01 of the first period, but just over three minutes later,
Mick Heneghan (Niles, Ill.) registered his first goal of the game on the power play to put the Pointers back in front.
Tyler German (Canton, Mich.) and
Fletcher Anderson (Thunder Bay, Ont./Sir William Churchill) added assists on the go-ahead.
At 17:42 of the first,
Isaac Moberg (St. Paul, Minn.) gave the Pointers a two-goal lead off an assist from
Cody Moline (North Branch, Minn.) as UWSP took a 3-1 lead to intermission.
The Blugolds scored a power-play goal at 3:42 of the second period to get within one.
UWSP got a power play just minutes later. Heneghan notched his second of the game with Sciarrino assisting on the power-play tally at 5:41.
UWEC again pulled within one at 5:12 of the third period. The game remained a one-goal game until the 14:06 mark of the third.
Andrew Poulias (Whitby, Ont.) scored off a nice feed from Anderson and Sciarrino to complete the scoring.
Alex Proctor (Allen, Texas) recorded the win with 22 saves. UWEC goaltender Max Gutjahr had 23 saves.
The Pointers head to UW-Stout for the first road conference game of the season on Friday (Nov. 17). Puck drop in Menomonie is set for 7:00 p.m.
