STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (1-0) opened the season with a 59-54 win over St. Norbert (0-1) in the UWSP Tip-Off Tournament.
Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) led the Pointers with 13 points.
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) was also in double figures with 10 points.
Kelly McIntyre (Waukesha, Wis./North) led UWSP in rebounds with nine off the bench.
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) buried a three to spark a 7-0 run and
Rachel Hagen (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) scored her first collegiate points as the Pointers took an 11-3 lead in the first. McIntyre added a late bucket and UWSP led 17-13 after one.
Emily Mortenson (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) and
Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) hit consecutive threes as the Pointers began the second on a 12-0 burst.
Ava Loftus (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) tallied her first collegiate basket and UWSP led 31-18 at the half.
Krueger nailed a three to begin the third quarter. Hagen had a layup later in the quarter, but the Green Knights pulled to within 42-38 heading to the fourth.
Gawlitta and Krueger combined for the first eight UWSP points of the fourth. McIntyre added four and Hagen had a layup, but UWSP couldn't shake SNC. Thomson made a layup with four seconds left to seal the win.
The Pointers will close out the UWSP Tip-Off Tournament with a 3:00 p.m. matchup against Concordia (Minn.) on Saturday (Nov. 11).
