Men’s Hockey Picks Up 700th Win of Modern Era

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 13 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (2-2-0) earned its 700th program win of the modern era (since 1987) with a 5-2 home victory over Saint Mary's (1-4-0) on Friday night.
 
Andrew Poulias (Whitby, Ont.) netted the game-winner, one of five Pointers with a multi-point night. He had a goal and an assist, as did Conor Witherspoon (Metamora, Mich.), Fletcher Anderson (Thunder Bay, Ont./Sir William Churchill) and Mick Heneghan (Niles, Ill.).
 
Saint Mary's opened the scoring with a goal at 18:38 of the first period and UWSP trailed after one.
 
Witherspoon pulled the Pointers even with a power-play tally at 6:46 of the second period. Poulias and goaltender Alex Proctor (Allen, Texas) got assists on the goal.
 
Just under four minutes later, Anderson scored on the power play with Witherspoon and Dawson Sciarrino (Greensburg, Pa.) getting assists.
 
Early in the third period, Poulias pushed the advantage to two goals with the eventual game-winner. Anderson and Gino Colangelo (Newmarket, Ont.) had helpers on the play.
 
At the 6:51 mark of the third, the Cardinals got within one goal to make things interesting late.
 
David Hill (Glen Mills, Pa.) extended the lead back to two at 16:22 in the third. Sciarrino added his second assist of the night with Heneghan also adding a helper.
 
Heneghan finished the scoring at 18:45 of the third with an empty-net goal from the defensive zone faceoff dot.
 
Proctor made 24 saves to go with his assist in the win. SMU goaltender Matt Sankner had 37 saves.
 
The Pointers face St. Olaf on Saturday (Nov. 11) to continue the three-game homestand. Puck drop at K.B. Willett Arean is slated for 7:00 p.m.
