STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team (7-10-1, 3-4-0) played No. 9 UW-La Crosse (15-1-1, 7-0-0) much closer than the 5-0 final indicated.
UWSP goalkeeper
Jessica Nigbur (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) made a season-high 15 saves to keep the Pointers within striking distance most of the match.
She made five saves in the first half and if not for a scramble near the post in the 31st minute, would have kept the Eagles off the board at the break.
Nigbur continued to hold the fort making 10 more saves to begin the second half before UWL made it 2-0 in the 70th minute. The Eagles would score on their next three shots on goal in the 74th, 77th and 86th minutes.
The Pointers did test UWL goalkeeper Sophia Anger with five shots.
Gina Wasniewski (Ironton, Minn./Brainerd),
Elena Rojas (Milwaukee, Wis./Whitefish Bay),
Cass Klitzke (Reedsburg, Wis./Reedsburg Area),
Heather Iverson (Luxemburg, Wis./Luxemburg-Casco) and
Nora Lee (Holmen, Wis./Holmen) each had one shot on goal.
UWSP will be the No. 5 seed in the WIAC Tournament next week and travel to UW-Oshkosh on Tuesday (Oct. 31) for a 6:00 p.m. first round match.
