Pointers Unable to Solve St. Olaf Netminder in Season Opener

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team (0-1-0) opener the season with a solid performance in a 1-0 defeat at St. Olaf (1-0-0) on Friday.

The Pointers out-shot the Oles, 31- 20, in the game, but were unable to get one past St. Olaf goaltender Hannah Fritz.

The teams skated to a scoreless first period with the Pointers firing 12 shots on goal to the Oles' six. The second period was much like the first with neither team able to get on the board with UWSP posting a 9-7 shot advantage.

St. Olaf was finally able to break the scoreless draw at the 12:17 mark of the third period. The Pointers again out-shot the Oles in the third, 10-7, to no avail in the end.

UWSP goaltender Emily Griege (Chesterfield, Mo./Westminster Christian Academy) made 19 saves in her Pointers' debut. Courtney Leising (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) led the Pointers with five shots on goal. Laina Berthiaume (South Haven, Minn./Hutchinson) added three.

The Pointers and Oles complete the two-game weekend series on Saturday (Oct. 28) with a 2;00 p.m. puck drop in Minnesota.
