Thomka, Zeller Season Highs Help Pointers to Split at UWW Tourney

WHITEWATER, Wis. – The No. 17 UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (17-4) split a pair of matches at the UWW Tournament on Saturday. The Pointers dropped a four-set matchup with No. 19 Gustavus Adolphus (18-6) before sweeping Dubuque (16-7) in the finale.
 
Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) was named to the all-tournament team after a big day on Saturday. She notched her 13th and 14th double-doubles of the season. She had 17 kills and 13 digs versus GAC and 23 kills with 11 digs versus UD.
 
Grace Michalske (Wausau, Wis./West) had her eighth double-double of the year with 39 assists and 14 digs against GAC. Carly Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) posted a season-best with 13 kills versus the Gusties.
 
Ryleigh Zeller (Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) racked up a season-high 24 digs in the win over the Spartans. Tessa Erlandson (Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon Wanamingo) led the Pointers in digs with 21 against GAC and was in double figures versus UD with 14 more.
 
UWSP 1, GAC 3 (25-27, 25-12, 18-25, 20-25)
Michalske served two aces and Thomka had a pair of blocks as UWSP used a 7-0 run to lead early. Sydney Mosinski (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) had a block and a kill as the Pointers briefly maintained the lead at 12-11. Thomka had two kills and block with Lauren Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) adding three kills in a 9-2 burst as UWSP held a 23-12 lead late. The Gusties scored six of the final eight points to take the opening set.
 
Shaw, Kopp and Mosinski combined for five kills as UWSP jumped in front, 10-3, in the second. Michalske served three-straight aces as UWSP seized control, 15-5. Shaw added two late kills as UWSP evened the match at 1-1.
 
Michalske and Kopp each had an ace early in the third set as UWSP led 9-8. A Mosinski kill late was all the offense UWSP could muster as GAC ended the set on an 8-2 run.
 
Kopp had two early kills and Thomka added four, but UWSP trailed 12-9 in the fourth. Thomka had two blocks in a 5-0 run as UWSP got within 21-19. GAC used a 4-1 run to close out the match.
 
UWSP 3, Dubuque 0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-23)
Five early kills by Kopp gave the Pointers a 7-6 edge. A trio of three-point burst by UWSP gave the Pointers a 20-15 lead. Shaw and Kopp combined for three kills as UWSP closed the opening set with a 5-0 run.
 
Mosinski and Kopp combined for three-straight kills as UWSP pulled even at 11-11 in the second. The teams traded points until UD held a slim 18-17 advantage. Mosinski had three kills and a block with Erlandson serving two aces as the Pointers took the set with an 8-1 run.
 
Shaw had consecutive kills to spark a 4-0 run as UWSP begin to dig out of a 12-5 hole in the third. Kopp and Thomka combined for six kills and on a block as a 7-1 run gave the Pointers an 18-16 lead. Following a 23-23 tie, Kopp powered down back-t-back kills to complete the sweep.
 
UWSP will begin a five-match homestand on Tuesday (Oct. 17) with a 7:00 p.m. match against Edgewood. The Pointers will be holding a food drive for the Cupboard and fans are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items for donation to the campus food bank.
