First-Set Burst Sparks Pointers to Another Home Sweep

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 17 UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (18-4) closed the first set on an 18-3 run and rolled to a 3-0 (25-14, 25-11, 25-14) sweep of visiting Edgewood (14-7) on Tuesday. It was UWSP's seventh-consecutive home sweep to begin the season.
 
Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) posted a double-double, her 15th of the season, with a match-high 14 kills and 13 digs. Sydney Mosinski (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) was the only other player in double figures with 10 kills.
 
Grace Michalske (Wausau, Wis./West) recorded 30 assists, her 15th match with at least 30 assists and eighth-straight. Lauren Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) added 12 digs, her eighth match of the season in double digits.
 
Mosinski had a block and two kills early as UWSP battled back to tie the first, 4-4. The Pointers trailed 11-7 before a Carly Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) kill sparked a monster run by UWSP. Kopp had two kills as a 7-0 run gave UWSP a 14-11 advantage. Kopp added two more kills and an ace as the lead grew to 20-13. Tessa Erlandson (Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon Wanamingo) served a pair of aces as a 5-0 burst closed the set.
 
Michalske and Thomka had back-to-back kills to open the second set. Shaw had a pair of blocks as UWSP held an 11-9 edge. Thomka served up three aces in a 10-0 run as UWSP wrapped the second set on a 14-1 burst.
 
Michalske and Kopp each had an ace as UWSP jumped ahead 5-2 to start the third. Summer Salettel (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) had a kill to start yet another big set-ending run. Kopp had five kills and three aces as the Pointers finished the sweep with an 18-7 run.
 
The Pointers continue the five-match homestand with a 7:00 p.m. match against UW-Platteville on Friday (Oct. 20).
