MENOMONIE, Wis. – The No. 17 UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (16-3, 3-1) prevailed in a seesaw battle to knock of UW-Stout (14-4, 0-4) in five sets, 3-2 (21-25, 25-14, 11-25, 25-14, 15-13).
Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and
Grace Michalske (Wausau, Wis./West) each recorded a double-double, Kopp's 12th and Michalske's sixth of the year. Kopp had a season-high 26 kills and added 20 digs. Michalske had a season-best 45 assists with 11 digs.
Emily Nielsen (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton) posted a career-best 10 digs.
Tessa Erlandson (Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon Wanamingo) led all players with 21 digs.
Summer Salettel (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) had UWSP's first kill as UWSP played from behind early, 6-4.
Sydney Mosinski (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) had three kills and a 5-0 burst by Stout saw the Pointers trail 15-10.
Ryleigh Zeller (Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) served her second ace of the set late, but the Blue Devils prevailed in a close first set.
Erlandson and Michalske each had an early ace to set the tone as UWSP jumped ahead 6-2 in the second. Kopp and Mosinski combined for five-straight kills as a 6-0 run gave UWSP a 14-6 lead.
Carly Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) had a kill, a block and two aces down the stretch as the Pointers evened the match at 1-1.
Kopp and Mosinski had four kills as UWSP began the third set up 5-2. A kill by Thomka and
Mady Hanse (Tomahawk, Wis./Tomahawk) were all UWSP could muster as the Bleu Devils closed the set on a 19-4 run.
Thomka had four blocks in a 6-0 run as UWSP jumped in front 10-5 in the fourth. Kopp had four kills and Nielsen served two aces in a 9-0 spurt as the Pointers seized control to send the match to a decisive fifth set.
Kopp and Thomka had two kills apiece as UWSP erased an early deficit to tie the fifth at 6-6. Mosinski had a kill and Zeller served an ace as the Pointers took a 10-8 advantage. Three late kills by Kopp kept the Blue Devils at bay as UWSP secured the win.
The Pointers will travel to Whitewater on Saturday (Oct. 14) for a pair of non-conference matches against Gustavus Adolphus at 2:30 p.m. and Dubuque at 4:30 p.m.
