WINONA, Minn. – Senior goaltender
Olivia Schultz (Maplewood, Minn./Tartan) notched a season-high 51 saves as the UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team (7-6-1) dropped a 2-1 decision in overtime at Saint Mary's (4-9-0).
Schultz kept a clean sheet in the first period making 19 saves as the Pointers were out-shot, 19-2. Schultz held the Cardinals to one goal on 21 more shots in the second period as shots favored the home side, 40-4 after two periods.
Midway through the third period, UWSP gave SMU its second power play of the game. Not only did UWSP kill off the penalty, but
Maike Zipp (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) scored a shorthanded goal to tie the game at 1-1. The goal was Zipp's first career shorthanded goal and
Courtney Leising (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) got an assist on the play.
Schultz made 12 more saves in the third to send the game to overtime. The Cardinals gained possession of the opening faceoff and scored on the second shot of overtime to pull out the win.
UWSP will return home to host UW-River Falls in a weekend conference series beginning on Friday (Jan. 13) at 7:00 p.m.
