Wincentsen’s Power-Play Tally Lifts Pointers to Win in 2023 Opener

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team (7-5-1) opened its 2023 campaign with a 1-0 win at Hamline (6-6-0) on Friday.

Lauren Wincentsen (Wausau, Wis./West) had the lone goal, a power-play goal at the 16:08 mark of the third period. Her first of the season came off an assist from Natalie Ahern (Byron, Minn./Byron).

UWSP goaltender Olivia Schultz (Maplewood, Minn./Tartan) held the host Pipers without a goal, the second time that Hamline has been shut out this season. Schultz had 33 saves for her second shutout of the season.

The Pipers out-shot UWSP in the first, 10-5, but Schultz stood tall. In the second, Hamline again had more shots on goal, 19-4. But in the third period, the Pointers gained the underhand firing 12 shots on net to just four for the Pipers.

Wincentsen's goal came on her only shot of the game. Courtney Leising (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) led UWSP with five shots.

The Pointers continue the weekend in Minnesota with a 2:00 p.m. game at Saint Mary's on Saturday (Jan. 7).
