STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 9 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (8-2-3) posted a season-high 49 shots on goal, but fell to visiting Hamline (6-6-1) in overtime, 3-2.
The Pipers broke through first with a goal at 17:50 of the first period and led after one despite the Pointers holding an 18-5 shot advantage in the first 20 minutes.
UWSP kept firing the puck at HU goaltender Kevin Lake and
Andrew Poulias (Whitby, Ont./) got one past him on the 31st shot of the game by the Pointers. Poulias' power-play tally at 15:41 of the second period was assisted on by
Jordan Fader (Rice Lake, Wis./) and
Conor Witherspoon (Metamora, Mich./).
At 5:10 of the third period, Witherspoon scored to give UWSP a 2-1 lead. Fader and
Fletcher Anderson (Thunder Bay, Ont./Sir William Churchill) had helpers on the play.
The Pipers tied the game at 14:58 of the third. The Pointers appeared to retake the lead at 16:26 of the third, but after a lengthy discussion, the referees disallowed the goal.
In overtime, the Pipers scored just 56 second in to win the game.
Lake made 47 saves in the win for the Pipers. UWSP goaltender
Ryan Wagner (Indianapolis, Ind./) made 20 saves.
The Pointers take on No. 4 Augsburg at K.B. Willett Arena on Saturday (Jan. 7). Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m.
