WHITEWATER, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (9-5, 1-2) had a chance at a game-tying shot at the buzzer while holding No. 17 UW-Whitewater (11-3, 2-1) to a season-low in points in a 55-52 defeat at UWW.
Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) led all scorers with 18 points.
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) was also in double figures for the Pointers with 14 points. Thomson led UWSP with eight rebounds.
Pfeifer posted seven of her points to begin the game as UWSP led 7-0 less than two minutes into the game.
Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) had a field goal midway through and the Pointers led 12-6 after one.
Pfeifer again scored seven early points with
Katelyn Slowik (Elcho, Wis./Elcho) hitting a jumper in between as the lead grew to 21-13.
Josie Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) and
Kelly McIntyre (Waukesha, Wis./North) each hit from the field late, but UWW roared back to take a 27-25 lead at the break.
Thomson scored UWSP's first four points of the third as the Pointers pulled even at 29-29.
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) and McIntyre had late buckets as UWSP was within two, 39-37, heading to the fourth.
Slowik buried a three and Thomson scored on the next possession as UWSP held a brief lead, 42-41, 85 seconds into the fourth. Thomson hit a field goal with 3:26 to go to keep UWSP within a possession. Thomson hit a contested three with 36 seconds remaining as UWSP got within two late, but a three-quarter court shot at the buzzer was off target.
UWSP travels to UW-La Crosse on Saturday (Jan. 7) to continue league action. Tipoff in slated for 3:00 p.m.
