LA CROSSE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (9-6, 1-3) had a shot for a game-winning buzzer beater for the second time this week in a 47-45 loss at UW-La Crosse (13-2, 2-2) on Saturday.
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) led the Pointers in scoring with 10 points. She just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) had 10 boards and also came just short of a double-double with nine points.
Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) and
Katelyn Slowik (Elcho, Wis./Elcho) each added seven points.
Thomson buried a three and scored UWSP's first five points for a brief 5-4 lead. Slowik and
Emily Mortenson (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) each hit from behind the arc and UWSP led 11-9 after one.
Gawlitta got in on the three-point shooting with a make in the opening minute of the second quarter.
Josie Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) had four points in a 10-0 UWSP run to break a 14-14 tie. Thomson had a late bucket as the Eagles got within two at the break, 26-24.
Gawlitta scored early in the third, but the Eagles pushed the UWSP deficit to seven. Minutes later, an
Olivia Hoerl (Chilton, Wis./Chilton) three-pointer got UWSP within two, 35-33.
Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) scored a bucket and the Pointers trailed 39-36 heading to the fourth.
Krueger drilled a three to start the fourth for the Pointers. Gawlitta scored four straight to give UWSP a 45-43 lead with 4:10 to go. But UWL scored the only four points the remainder of the game for the win.
The Pointers return home for the first time in 2023 with a 7:00 p.m. matchup against UW-River Falls on Wednesday (Jan. 11).
