Women’s Basketball Completes Season Sweep of UW-Platteville

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (11-8, 3-5) pulled out a 51-49 win at UW-Platteville (9-10, 2-6) to complete the season sweep of the Pioneers.

Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) and Kelly McIntyre (Waukesha, Wis./North) scored nine points each to lead the Pointers in scoring. Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) added eight points and led UWSP in rebounding with eight boards.

Josie Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) and Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) each had early baskets, but UWSP trailed until McIntyre buried a three for a 7-5 lead. Olivia Hoerl (Chilton, Wis./Chilton) and Krueger made baskets in the final two minutes to break an 11-all tie and give UWSP a 15-11 advantage after one.

Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) began the second quarter with an and-one to push the lead to seven. Krueger regained the lead with a three after a 7-0 spurt by UWP tied the game at 18-18. The UWSP run hit 9-0 after back-to-back buckets by Gawlitta. Nies added a late layup and the Pointers held a 29-24 lead at the half.

Pfeifer scored on the first possession of the third quarter and Thomson snapped another 7-0 run by the Pioneers with a jumper. Katelyn Slowik (Elcho, Wis./Elcho) and Gawlitta had late buckets as UWSP trailed 42-41 heading to the fourth.

Abbie Campion (Janesville, Wis./Milton) and Krueger each scored to get UWSP to a 46-46 tie with 4:14 remaining. Krueger scored again and McIntyre sank two free throws to complete an 8-0 run and give UWSP a 50-46 lead. Clinging to a one-point lead, Nies hit a free throw with six seconds left and a desperation three was no good as the Pointers prevailed.

The Pointers will travel to UW-Stout on Wednesday (Jan. 25) for a 7:00 p.m. matchup with the Blue Devils.
