German’s Last Minute Goal Lifts Pointers to Weekend-Opening Victory

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 10 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (11-3-3, 7-0-0) got a goal in the final minute of regulation to secure a 5-4 win over UW-River Falls (7-10-1, 1-6-1) to begin the weekend.

Brady Smith (Bloomington, Ill./) got UWSP on the board at 14:25 of the first period. He grabbed a loose puck in the defensive zone and skated to length of the ice ripping a wrister into the net for a 1-0 lead.

The Falcons tied the game on a power-play goal late in the first period.

UWSP got a power-play goal of its own at 6:22 of the second period. Conor Witherspoon (Metamora, Mich./) cleaned up a loose puck at the side of the net after a pair of saves by the UWRF goaltender. Fletcher Anderson (Thunder Bay, Ont./Sir William Churchill) and Andrew Poulias (Whitby, Ont./) had assists on the play.

Again, the Falcons pulled even less than two minutes later.

Just past the midpoint of the second period, Dawson Sciarrino (Greensburg, Pa./) picked the pocket of a UWRF defender and walked in alone to put the Pointers back in front, 3-2.

Later in the second, Noah Finstrom (New Baltimore, Mich./) tipped a shot by Mick Heneghan (Niles, Ill./) to extend the lead to 4-2. Tyler German (Canton, Mich./) also assisted on the goal at 17:34.

UWRF scored twice in the third period to tie the game at 4-4 where it remained until the final minute of regulation. German got to a loose puck in front of the UWRF netminder and ripped the game-winner at 19:21 of the third. Isaac Moberg (St. Paul, Minn./) picked up an assist after taking the faceoff that resulted in the goal.

UWSP goaltenders Alex Proctor (Allen, Texas) improved to 6-1-2 with 21 saves in the win. UWRF goaltender Dean Buchholz had 22 saves.

The Pointers and Falcons conclude the weekend and season series on Saturday (Jan. 21). Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. at K.B. Willett Arena.
