UWSP Volleyball Wins Twice at WIAC Quad

OSHKOSH, Wis. – The No. 24 UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (4-1) took down Lakeland (3-3) in four sets before dispatching St. Norbert (0-5) in straight sets at the WIAC Quad on Wednesday.
 
Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) recorded double-doubles in both match to make it five-straight matches with double-doubles to begin the season. She posted a career-high 28 kills against Lakeland while adding 10 digs. Against SNC, Kopp had 17 more kills with a season-high tying 12 digs.
 
Grace Michalske (Wausau, Wis./West) also registered a double-double in both matches and tied her career high with 48 assists versus the Muskies. She had 32 more assists against SNC and totaled 22 digs over the two matches.
 
Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) led all players in digs in both matches. She had 20 versus Lakeland and 24 more versus the Green Knights.
 
Kelsie Belfiori (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) added double-figure digs with 11 and 14 on the night. Sydney Mosinski (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) had 12 kills against Lakeland and Katie Larson (Hammond, Wis./St. Croix Central) had 12 versus SNC.
 
UWSP 3, Lakeland 1 (25-12, 25-20, 21-25, 25-21)
Olivia Paukner (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) capped a 3-0 start to the first set with a kill. Mosinski powered down four kills in a 13-2 run as UWSP seized control, 21-6. Kopp added kills for set point and set winner.
 
Larson had a pair of early kills as set two began even until 9-9. After falling behind by a few points, UWSP rallied behind three kills by Kopp. Larson drilled another kill to give the Pointers set point and secure a 2-0 lead.
 
Peterson served an ace early in the third set to give UWSP a 4-2 edge. A 9-1 run by the Muskies put UWSP behind 15-8. Kopp had three late kills including a pair in a 4-0 run as UWSP spoiled four set points before the Muskies took the set.
 
Kopp had four early kills in the fourth set, but Lakeland took a 6-4 lead. Kopp and Grace Regnier (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) combined for five consecutive kills as the Pointers used their own 9-1 run to go in front 15-11. After Lakeland battled back to an 18-18 tie, Melanie Meyer (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) and Kopp had five kills as UWSP closed out the set on a 7-3 spurt.
 
UWSP 3, SNC 0 (25-16, 31-29, 25-6)
Larson and Belfiori each served up an ace as UWSP opened the match with a 14-7 advantage. Kopp and Larson each added three kills down the stretch as the Pointers closed out the first set.
 
Mosinski had a kill and a block to sandwich a 5-0 run in the second set as UWSP went ahead 12-8. Kopp and Larson combined for five kills to give UWSP set point at 24-21. The Green Knights reeled off a 5-1 run for their own set point. Larson had kills to even the set at 26-26 and 27-27. Facing another set point, Mosinski posted a kill and a block for a 29-28 lead. SNC got the next point and Kopp put an end to the set with back-to-back kills.
 
Michalske served three aces and Kopp and Larson combined for six kills as UWSP open the third set up 11-0. Kopp and Larson each added an ace as UWSP rolled the match win.
 
The Pointers return to Oshkosh on Friday (Sept. 9) for a 5:00 p.m. match against Millikin.
