ST. PAUL, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (2-1) split a pair of tough three-set matches to close out the weekend at the Kathryn Pals Legacy Invitational. UWSP opened the day with a 3-0 sweep of Coe (1-1) before falling to host No. 15 Northwestern (4-0) in straight sets.
Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) had double-doubles in both games with 18 kills and 10 digs against Coe and going for 11 and 12 versus UNW.
Grace Michalske (Wausau, Wis./West) added a double-double of her own with 41 assists and 12 digs against the Kohawks.
Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) was in double figures in digs in both matches with 20 and 12 on the day.
Katie Larson (Hammond, Wis./St. Croix Central) has 11 kills against UNW and was named to the All-Tournament Team.
UWSP 3, Coe 0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-12)
Michalske had an early ace as UWSP open the first set with an 8-4 run. The Pointers built a 19-13 lead and five kills by Kopp late secured the first set win.
Megan Schroder (Merrill, Wis./Merrill),
Sydney Mosinski (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) and Larson spread the offense with a kill each early in the second set, but a 5-0 run by the Kohawks put UWSP behind at 16-9. Kopp, Larson and
Melanie Meyer (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) combined for four consecutive kills as UWSP nudged ahead 22-21. After a 24-24 tie, Meyer knocked down back-to-back kills to give UWSP a 2-0 lead.
Kopp sparked a 6-0 run with a kill as UWSP went up 17-10 in the third set. After consecutive points by Coe, Olivia Puakner had a kill and a block as the Pointers scored the final eight points to finish the sweep.
UWSP 0, UNW 3 (21-25, 24-26, 23-25)
Michalske served up another early ace and the Pointers went ahead 6-3 early. Larson had a pair of kills midway through the first set, but a 5-1 run late gave UNW the first set win.

Sophia Lee (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) helped UWSP to a 4-2 lead in the second set. Mosinski had a trio of kills and a block to keep UWSP close. Larson posted three late kills in a 5-1 run by the Pointers to tie the set at 24-24 before UNW scored the final two points.
Paukner had two kills and Michalske another ace as UWSP started the third set up 4-0. Mosinski had back-to-back kills as the Pointers doubled up UNW, 12-6. The Eagles posted a 15-6 to ease in front 22-19. Kopp had back-to-back kills to avert a pair of match points, but UNW prevailed.
The Pointers head to Oshkosh on Wednesday (Sept. 7) for the WIAC/MWC Quad. UWSP faces Lakeland at 5:30 and St. Norbert at 7:30 p.m.
