Pointers Knock Off Simpson to Win Pink Game

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point football team (1-2) earned its first win under head coach Luke Venne with a 35-14 win over visiting Simpson (0-2) in the annual Pink Game for Cancer. The event raised $50, 127 and raises the 12-year total for the collective event past $525,000.

Brycen Cashin (Plover, Wis./Pacelli) rumbled for 167 yards rushing and three touchdowns. His rushing total was the 17th-best single game output in program history. He added 62 yards to his all-purpose total on two kickoff returns.

UWSP quarterback Trey Schroeder (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) rushed for a touchdown of his own and racked up 51 yards on the ground. He completed 9-of-16 passes and had another touchdown through the air.

Defensively, the Pointers held the Storm to 310 total yards of offense. Tysen White (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) had two of UWSP's four interceptions in the game.

On the third offensive possession of the first quarter for UWSP, Cashin ripped through the line and 70 yards later reached the end zone untouched to put the Pointers ahead, 7-0.

Two possessions into the second quarter, UWSP started at midfield. An eight-yard rush by Schroeder and four yards by Cashin earned a first down. Cashin needed just one more play to find the end zone capping the drive with a 38-yard touchdown run. The extra point was blocked as UWSP led 13-0.

UWSP was on the move again with its next offensive possession. Starting at their own 45, the Pointers got to the Simpson 23-yard line in six plays, but were stalled there. Victor Ponterio's (Melrose, Wis./Melrose-Mindoro) field goal attempt was no good as the lead remained at 13-0.

Just before halftime, UWSP again gained possession in its own half. Starting at the 40-yard line, Schroeder hit Jeffery Williams (Brodhead, Wis./Brodhead) for a 44-yard completion on third down. Schroeder finished the drive on the next play, rushing for the final 16 yards to the end zone as UWSP was in front 20-0 at the half.

The Storm put their first points on the board on the opening drive of the second half. It took Simpson just four plays to go 65 yards to make it 20-7.

UWSP responded on the ensuing possession. Schroeder gained 17 yards on two runs to get UWSP into Simpson territory. Cashin tacked on 13 yards on the next two plays. Schroeder capped the drive with a 33-yard strike to DJ Jacob (Toms River, N.J./North) as the Pointers regained a three-possession lead at 27-7.

The Storm got a 41-yard return on the UWSP kickoff and took 12 plays to go the remaining 56 yards for their second touchdown in as many possessions in the second half.

With 1:48 left in the third quarter, Cody Trowbridge (Milladore, Wis./Auburndale) got UWSP's second interception of the game setting the Pointers up at the Simpson 19. On the next play, Cashin found the end zone for the third time in the game. On the PAT, Ponterio picked up a botched hold and completed the conversion on a pass to Nathan Schmidt (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) for a 35-14 score.

White notched his second interception of the game on the first play of the fourth quarter.  Carson Van Ess (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) got the fourth INT of the game on the next Simpson possession and the Pointers ran out the clock for the victory.

Following a bye week, the Pointers travel to UW-River Falls to open league play on Oct. 2. Kickoff in River Falls is set for 1:00 p.m.
