Unger’s Career Day Highlights Pointers’ Conference Opener

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point football team's attempt to spoil UW-River Falls' Homecoming was not successful as the host No. 17 Falcons (3-1, 1-0) earned a 56-3 win in both team's league opener.

UWSP punter Carter Unger (Waukesha, Wis./South) had a career day for the Pointers (1-3, 0-1). He booted a career-high 11 punts, tied for second most in school history. Three of his punts went for 50+ yards, a career-best for Unger.

Defensively, RJ Miner (Algonquin, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) led all players with 11 tackles in the game.  Tysen White (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) added eight. Carter Borchardt (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) led UWSP with two tackles for loss and he forced a fumble.

The UWSP offense mustered just 104 total yards of offense. Quarterbacks Trey Schroeder (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) and Charlie Smith (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) combined for five completions. Reed Smith (Powell, Wyo./Powell) recorded 26 yards on the ground on nine carries.

The Pointers' defense bent but didn't break on UWRF's opening drive. The Falcons drove to the UWSP 26 and face a fourth down. Even with a completed pass, Borchardt came up with a drive-stopping tackle to give UWSP the ball on downs.

UWRF was able to solve the UWSP defense for touchdowns on the next two drives and held a 14-0 lead at the end of one quarter.

As the second quarter began, the Falcons extended to lead to 21-0. Unger's first punt of the quarter was fumbled by the UWRF returner and Brycen Cashin (Plover, Wis./Pacelli) recovered for the Pointers. Seth Forbes (Manawa, Wis./Little Wolf) rushed for 10 yards on the second play of the drive to get UWSP to the 10. The Pointers were stymied there and Victor Ponterio (Melrose, Wis./Melrose-Mindoro) got UWSP on the board with a 26-yard field goal.

The Falcons put up three more scores in the quarter and UWSP trailed 42-3 at the half.  UWRF tacked on a touchdown in the third quarter and another in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring.

The Pointers return home for two-straight beginning next Saturday (Oct. 8) for Homecoming. UWSP will host UW-Platteville at 2:00 p.m.
