EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's tennis team battled to a 7-2 defeat at UW-Eau Claire in the conference opener on Saturday. The two points by the Pointers marks the first multiple match win versus the Blugolds since the 2009-10 season.
The Pointers nearly got on the board in doubles play. The No. 1 duo of Tristin Jantz and Quinlyn Mack fell in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (10-8).
UWSP broke through in singles play. At No. 4 singles,
Barbara Covek (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) dropped the opening set in a tiebreak, 7-6 (10-8). She rebounded for a 6-3 win in the second set and secured the win with a 10-4 showing in the super-breaker.
At No. 5 singles, Maya Kunze also needed a super-breaker to take the match. After falling in the first set, 6-3, she earned a 6-1 set two victory. Then in the super-breaker, she prevailed 10-7.
Mack also forced a super-breaker at No. 1 singles. She won the first set, 6-1, before falling 6-4 in the second set and 10-5 in the super-breaker.
The Pointers will take a breather before returning to league play on Sept. 21 at home versus UW-Stout. The start time is set for 3:00 p.m. at University Courts.
