STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 16 UW-Stevens Point baseball team (28-6, 19-5) finished off the series sweep of visiting UW-Platteville (12-17, 10-12) with a come-from-behind 11-4 victory on Tuesday.
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) drove in a game-high four runs, including the game-winners in a pivotal six-run fourth inning. He had two hits.
Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) and
Aaron Simmons (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) each scored three runs at the top of the UWSP lineup. Simmons also had an RBI.
Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) collected two hits with two runs scored and an RBI.
The Pointer fell behind for the fourth time in the series as UWP scored three runs on three hits in the second inning. The Pioneers tacked on another run in the third as UWSP trailed 4-0.
In the fourth,
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego),
Lucas Luedtke (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) and
Quin Henwood (Appleton, Wis./North) all drew walks to load the bases.
Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) hit a sac fly to plate one. Baumann drove in another on a fielder's choice. Simmons followed with an RBI single. Nelson doubled off the left-center wall to tie the game at 4-4. Comer plated two more with a single as UWSP took a 6-4 lead.
Baumann drew a one-out walk in the sixth and Simmons was hit by a pitch. With two down, Comer singled to put another run on the board. Comer then drew a throw on an attempted steal and Simmons scampered home to make it 8-4.
In the eighth, Baumann, Simmons and Nelson were all hit by pitches to load the bases. Comer drove in one with a groundout. Another scored on a wild pitch and Tomczak plated the final run of the game with a groundout.
Marcus Jaworski (Iola, Wis./Iola-Scandinavia) earned the win with 4.0 scoreless frames in relief. He struck out one.
Tyler Beyer (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) tossed the final 2.0 with just one hit allowed. He fanned four.
The Pointers travel to Oshkosh to close out the regular season beginning with a doubleheader on Friday (May 6) beginning at 12:00 p.m.
