Monster Offensive Day for Simmons Lifts Pointers to Sweep of UWO

OSHKOSH, Wis. – Senior Aaron Simmons (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) etched his name atop the WIAC record books as he helped the No. 16 UW-Stevens Point baseball team (30-6, 21-5) swept a doubleheader at UW-Oshkosh (20-15, 14-10) on Friday. UWSP took game one, 4-2, before completing the sweep with a 7-5 win in game two.

Simmons had seven hits on the day, including his WIAC record-tying 16th career triple. He belted two home runs and two doubles among his seven knocks. He had three RBI and scored five times. In game two, Simmons was a double shy of a cycle.

Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) also nearly had a cycle in game two. He went 4-for-5 and was a home run shy of the feat. Comer had five hits on the day with an RBI and a runs scored.

Lucas Luedtke (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) collected four hits on the day with an RBI. Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) had two hits, including a tiebreaking two-run homer in game two.

Game 1 – UWSP 4, UWO 2
Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) drew a one-out walk in the third inning. He moved to third on a double by Simmons and scored on a groundout by Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) for a 1-0 lead. A balk brought Simmons in from third and a 2-0 advantage.

Simmons doubled again with one away in the fifth. He advanced to third on another groundout by Nelson. Luedtke gave UWSP a 3-0 lead with an RBI single.

After UWO got a run in the seventh, Quin Henwood (Appleton, Wis./North) was hit by a pitch to begin the ninth. Two batters later, Logan Matson (Neillsville, Wis./Neillsville) singled to put two aboard. Then with two away, Simmons singled up the middle for a 4-1 score. The Titans got a run in the bottom of the ninth, but no more as UWSP took the opener.

JD Schultz (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) picked up his second win of the year with 6.1 strong innings in the start. He struck out six while scattering just four hits. Sidney Ferry (Paw Paw, Mich./Homeschooled) registered his fifth save of the season, the 14th of his career to claim sole possession of fourth in school history.

Game 2 – UWSP 7, UWO 5
The Titans took a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a pair of runs on two hits. UWO added another in the third on two more hits.

UWO tacked on a run in the bottom of the fourth. Simmons got the run back in the fifth with his first home run of the game.

In the seventh, Simmons homered again to tie the game at 4-4. Nelson followed with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Comer doubled to left to plate Nelson for a 5-4 lead. The Titans pulled even with a run in the bottom of the frame.

The game remained tied into the ninth. Simmons led off with a single and stole second. Then with two down, Tomczak blasted a two-run shot to right for a 7-5 lead.
