STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 15 UW-Stevens Point baseball team (27-6, 18-5) swept a tripleheader from visiting UW-Platteville (12-16, 10-11) on Monday. In all three games UWSP rallied from behind with a 4-3 win in game one, an 11-4 victory in game two and a walk-off 7-6 win in the finale. All three games were scheduled for seven innings with the third game going eight.
Senior
Aaron Simmons (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) belted a pair of home runs on Monday, Senior Day for the Pointers. It gives him 32 for his career, tying him for third in school history. He had four hits on the day, three of which went for extra bases. He had six RBI and scored three times.
Logan Matson (Neillsville, Wis./Neillsville) had six hits on the day, including a key three-run home run in the game three comeback. He drove in five on the day and scored six runs, including the walk-off in game three.
Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) had five hits with an RBI and four runs scored.
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) and
Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) also homered on the day.
Game 1 – UWSP 4, UWP 3 (7)
Two batters in the Pointers trailed 2-0 in the opening game. Back-to-back walks to Baumann and Simmons started the bottom of the first. With two away,
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) singled up the middle as UWSP cut the deficit in half.
In the second, Matson singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. He scored on a single by Baumann to tie the game at 2-2.
The Pioneers reclaimed the lead in the third, but UWSP battled right back in the fourth. Baumann led off with a single and moved to third on two wild pitches. A sac fly by
Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) got UWSP even again at 3-3.
Boos blasted a leadoff home run to right in the sixth as UWSP took its first lead.
Sidney Ferry (Paw Paw, Mich./Homeschooled) picked up the win with 2.0 scoreless innings to close the game. He struck out three. Starter
Casey Pickering (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) and reliever
Austin Syvertson (Randolph, Wis./Randolph) each fanned two.
Game 2 – UWSP 11, UWP 4 (7)
The Pointers only needed to dig out of a 1-0 hole after the top of the first in game two. They did so in the third inning. Baumann drew a one-out walk. Simmons followed with a no-doubter to right as UWSP took a 2-1 lead. Two batters later, Comer belted a solo shot to right for a 3-1 lead.
In the fourth,
Kyle Finger (Clintonville, Wis./Clintonville) walked to begin the frame.
Jacob Lillge (Little Chute, Wis./Little Chute) doubled off the wall in left-center to put two in scoring position. Matson dropped a single into right-center to plate one. A passed ball scored another. Simmons then doubled to center to score a third run. Comer kept the rally going with a two-out RBI double into the leftfield corner. After
Lucas Luedtke (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) drew a walk,
Quin Henwood (Appleton, Wis./North) plated two more with a double to left-center as UWSP went up 9-1.
UWP got two runs back in the top of the fifth on three hits to make it 9-3. In the bottom of the fifth, Three-straight one-out walks loaded the bases. Nelson hit a sac fly to get UWSP to double digits and a 10-3 lead.
The teams traded runs in the sixth with UWSP getting its run on a sac fly by Matson.
Caleb Krommenakker (Rudolph, Wis./Lincoln) got his fifth win of the season with 5.1 strong innings, He struck out three. His brother
Nathan Krommenakker (Rudolph, Wis./Lincoln) tossed the final 1.2 with two strikeouts.
Game 3 – UWSP 7, UWP 6 (8)
UWSP fell into a 5-0 hole in the top of the first as the Pioneers worked three walks and got four hits.
Matson led off the third with a single. Baumann hit a double to put two in scoring position and Simmons drove both in with a single to right-center.
The Pioneers tacked on a run in the fifth to make it 6-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, UWSP finally erased the deficit. Boos dropped a bunt single to lead off. Henwood coaxed a walk. With one away, Matson slugged a three-run shot out to left to get UWSP within one. Two batters later, Simmons tied the game with a solo shot on an 0-2 count.
The game remained tied until the eighth. Matson singled with one away and moved to second on a wild pitch. After a groundout moved him to third, UWP intentionally walked seniors Simmons and Nelson to load the bases. Five pitches later, a wild pitch gave the Pointers the walk-off win as Matson scampered in from third.
Ferry picked up his second win of the day with 1.2 innings to end the game. He had one strikeout.
Nick Carpenter (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) absorbed 5.1 in relief with two strikeouts.
The Pointers and Pioneers will wrap up the series with a single, nine-inning game beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday (May 3) at Zimmermann Field.
