Krommenakker Tosses Shutout as Pointers Win the WIAC Tournament

WHITEWATER, Wis. – The No. 17 UW-Stevens Point baseball team (34-7) rolled past UW-Oshkosh (24-19) with a 10-0 eight-inning win to claim the 12th WIAC Tournament championship in school history.
 
Senior Caleb Krommenakker (Rudolph, Wis./Lincoln) pitched a complete game three-hitter in the shutout win. He had two strikeouts and walked just one.
 
Fellow senior Lucas Luedtke (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) tied a season-high with five RBI in a three-hit day. He came a triple shy of the cycle.
 
Yet another senior, Aaron Simmons (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) hit a walk-off solo home run, his 18th of the year to tie the single-season school record. Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) added three hits, drove in three runs and scored three times.
 
The Pointers took the lead in the first inning. Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a single by Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West). Comer singled to load the bases. With two away, Luedtke dropped a two-run single through the left side as UWSP took a 2-0 lead.
 
In the second, Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) started the frame with a double. Logan Matson (Neillsville, Wis./Neillsville) followed with a single to put runners at the corners. Simmons was hit with a pitch to load the bases. Nelson drew an RBI walk and Comer cleared the bases with a double. Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) singled and Luedtke drove in another run on a fielder's choice as the lead grew to 7-0.
 
Comer singled with one out in the fourth. He advanced to second on a flyout and stole third. Luedtke singled again to drive him home for a 8-0 advantage.
 
Luedtke was at it again in the seventh. He hit the second pitch of the inning over the fence for a solo home run, his ninth of the season.
 
Simmons ended the game in the eighth. He led off and walloped a 2-2 pitch out for a walk-off solo home run. He ties the single season school record with 18 home runs this season and now has 38 for his career, the second-most in team history.
 
The Pointers advance to the 17th NCAA Tournament in school history. UWSP will await its regional opponent and location which will be announced on Monday (May 16) at 11:00 a.m. on ncaa.com.
