Pointers Prevail in Comeback Win over LU in NCAA Regional Opener

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – After a two-and-a-half-hour rain delay, it was business as usual as the No. 12 UW-Stevens Point baseball team (35-7) earned yet another come-from-behind win, 11-6, over Lawrence (26-12) in the NCAA Tournament Regional Round opening game on Friday.

Logan Matson (Neillsville, Wis./Neillsville) had a team-best three runs batted in, including one of the Pointers' three solo home runs. He had three hits and scored two runs.

Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) also had three hits, including a home run. He had two RBI and two runs scored. Lucas Luedtke (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) drove in two with two hits, two walks and two runs scored. Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) collected three hits with an RBI and a run scored.

The Pointers jumped in front in the first inning. Baumann led off with a single up the middle. Then with two away, he scored on a Comer double off the right field wall for a 1-0 lead.

UWSP doubled its lead in the third. Aaron Simmons (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) singled to begin the frame. He moved to second on a Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) walk. Two batters later, Luedtke drew a base on balls to load the bases. Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) got an RBI on a groundout to make it 2-0.

The Vikings put three runs on the board in the fourth on three hits and added another run in the fifth as UWSP trailed 4-2.

Nelson drew a leadoff walk in the fifth to spark a big rally. Comer singled and both moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Luedtke followed with a two-RBI double to tie the game. Two batters later, Quin Henwood (Appleton, Wis./North) was hit by a pitch and a passed ball allowed both runners to move up. Matson singled to plate both runs and give the Pointers the lead. Matson stole second and scored on a double by Baumann for a 7-4 lead.

After Lawrence got a run back in the sixth, Nelson and Comer hit back-to-back solo jacks to begin the bottom of the frame for a 9-5 advantage. Matson hit a solo home run on the first pitch of the bottom of the seventh to give UWSP double digits.

Doubles by Luedtke and Henwood in the eighth gave UWSP another run. The Viking got one in the ninth, but nothing more.

JD Schultz (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) went 3.1 in the start with one strikeout. Nick Carpenter (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) picked up the win. Austin Syvertson (Randolph, Wis./Randolph) went 3.0 and fanned three. Tyler Beyer (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) struck out two in the ninth.

The Pointers will face the two-seed North Central at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday (May 21). The Cardinals hit a walk-off grand slam to defeat Coe in Friday's game two. Coe and Lawrence will play an elimination game beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.
