WHITEWATER, Wis. – The No. 15 UW-Stevens Point baseball team (24-6, 15-5) fell in both games of Tuesday's league matchup between ranked foes. The Pointers dropped game one, 4-1, before suffering a sweep with a 9-1 loss in game two at No. 9 UW-Whitewater (25-6, 17-3).
Lucas Luedtke (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) led the UWSP offense with four of the Pointers' 11 hits on the day. He drove in the lone run of game two.
Quin Henwood (Appleton, Wis./North) had two hits in game two, the only other UWSP hitter with multiple hits on the day.
Game 1 – UWSP 1, UWW 4
UWSP starter
JD Schultz (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) struck out six over the first four frames while holding the Warhawks scoreless until the fifth. UWW broke the 0-0 with consecutive two-hits in the fifth.
The Warhawks made it 2-0 in the sixth as the first three batters reached.
In the eighth, the Pointers got on the board.
Kyle Finger (Clintonville, Wis./Clintonville) reached on an error and move to second on the play. After moving to third on a groundout, he scored on a sac fly by
Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) to cut the deficit to 2-1.
UWW put up two in the bottom of the eighth to complete the scoring.
Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) hit a leadoff double in the ninth, but was stranded there to end the game.
Schultz fanned seven in 6.2 innings of work.
Marcus Jaworski (Iola, Wis./Iola-Scandinavia) struck out one in 1.1 frames.
Game 2 – UWSP 1, UWW 9
UWW put up five runs on five hits in the bottom of the first, including a backbreaking three-run homer with two outs.
The Pointers got one back in the second.
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) led off with a double to right-center. Two batters later, Luedtke drove him home with a single to center.
UWSP had runners on in five of the final seven innings, but were not able to dip into the deficit. UWW added a run in the sixth and three more in the seventh.
The Pointers return home to face UW-Platteville in a four-game weekend series at Zimmermann Field beginning on Saturday (April 30). First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
