STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (3-13, 0-9) fell behind 23 seconds in the game and never led in a 72-58 loss to No. 2 UW-Platteville (19-2, 8-2) on Saturday.
Brennan Timm (West Bend, Wis./West) led the Pointers with 13 points.
Garrett Nelson (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) and
Zach Mootz (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) were also in double figures with 12 and 11, respectively.
Nelson got UWSP on the board nearly two minutes into the game. A three by Mootz got the Pointers within three at 8-5. Just past the midpoint of the first half, Timm drained a three to make it 15-10.
Brady Wagner (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) nailed a three with 5:04 left in the first half to halt a 10-4 run by the Pioneers.
Jake Buchanan (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) hit from behind the arc with 3:30 to go, but UWP ended the half on a 9-2 to put UWSP at a 37-22 deficit.
Nelson made four free throws early in the second half and Mootz buried a three. Timm made a layup midway through the half as UWSP cut the lead to nine, 53-44. The Pioneers ripped off nine straight points and extended the UWSP deficit to as much as 20 with 1:30 remaining.
The Pointers continue to two-game homestand on Wednesday (Feb. 9) when UW-Oshkosh comes to town. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
