PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Freshman
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) hit a three-pointer with two seconds remaining to give the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (10-8, 3-6) an 75-72 comeback win at UW-Platteville (9-12, 2-9).
Thomson was one of four players in double figures with 12 points. She had nine rebounds to just miss a double-double.
Senior
Jessica Slowik (Elcho, Wis./Elcho) poured in a team-leading and career-high 19 points.
Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) added 11, all in the pivotal fourth quarter. Platteville native
Josie Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) was also in double figures with 10 points.
Taylor Greenheck (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) and Nies each hit a three to pull UWSP even at 3-3 and 6-6 in the middle of the first.
Sierra Raine (Bloomer, Wis./Bloomer) and
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) had baskets on back-to-back possessions, but UWSP trailed 13-10 after one.
Slowik nailed a three to begin the second to tie the game at 13-13. The Pioneers rattled off the next seven points before Greenheck hit again from behind the arc. Slowik scored UWSP's next 12 points and UWSP led at the half, 28-26.
Thomson opened the third with a three-pointer and scored seven of UWSP's first nine points. Later in the quarter, Greenheck completed an and-one for a 42-42 tie, but UWSP fell behind 56-50 heading to the fourth.
Pfeifer scored six early points in the fourth as UWSP kept it close at 66-62 midway through.
Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) made a layup with 2:00 left and completed the and-one for a 69-68 lead. Pfeifer completed her own and-one with 1:23 left giving the Pointers a 72-70 advantage. UWP tied the game with 11 seconds left setting up Thomson's game-winner with two second remaining.
UWSP heads to UW-Oshkosh to face the Titans on Wednesday (Feb. 9). Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
