ST. PAUL, Minn. – The No. 10 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (19-5-1) took nearly a period to get rolling, but once they did, they cruised past Hamline (4-16-3) by a 9-0 final.
Brady Smith (Bloomington, Ill.) broke the scoreless tie at the 18:48 mark of the first period.
Jake Theis (Chanhassen, Minn.) and
Brandon McReynolds (North Vancouver, B.C.) had assists.
Just 31 seconds into the second period,
Tyler German (Canton, Mich.) scored his first of the game with
Nick Gonrowski (New Hope, Minn.) and
Fletcher Anderson (Thunder Bay, Ont.) getting helpers.
German made it 3-0 with a power-play goal at 9:47 of the second with Anderson against getting an assist.
The floodgates opened in the third period. McReynolds scored at 1:36.
Dawson Sciarrino (Greensburg, Pa.),
Andrew Poulias (Whitby, Ont.) and
Conor Witherspoon (Metamora, Mich.) scored to make it 7-0 by the 12:30 mark of the third. Then at 16:26, German completed his first career hat trick.
Jordan Fader (Rice Lake, Wis.) wrapped up the scoring with a tap in at 18:58. Eight different Pointers had multi-point nights.
Ryan Wagner (Indianapolis, Ind.) recorded the shutout with a 22-save performance. Hamline goaltender Maximillian Haselbacher had 34 saves.
The Pointers await the winner of the UW-Stout versus UW-Superior quarterfinal series to be played this weekend. The advancing team will face UWSP at K.B. Willett Arena in the semifinals beginning Feb. 25. Tickets for the semifinal series go on sale on Monday (Feb. 21) at 8:00 a.m.
