STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 10 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (20-5-1) earned a 4-3 win in the first semifinal of the WIAC Tournament (presented by Culver's) over visiting UW-Superior (15-11-2) on Friday night.
Conor Witherspoon (Metamora, Mich.) scored the first of his two goals at the 18:53 mark of the first period.
Fletcher Anderson (Thunder Bay, Ont.) and
Nick Gonrowski (New Hope, Minn.) had assists on the goal that gave UWSP the lead after one.
Witherspoon doubled UWSP's lead at 15:36 of the second period. Anderson and
Tyler German (Canton, Mich.) had helpers on Witherspoon's second of the game.
David Hill (Glen Mills, Pa.) extended the Pointers' lead back to two at 2:49 of the third period. His power-play tally was assisted by
Carter Roo (Champlin, Minn.) and
Mick Heneghan (Niles, Ill.).
At 13:32 of the third period,
Noah Finstrom (New Baltimore, Mich.) flipped a back-hander into the net for a 4-2 lead.
Jake Theis (Chanhassen, Minn.) assisted on the goal.
Ryan Wagner (Indianapolis, Ind.) made 21 saves to get the win, including a magnificent kick save in the third period. UW-Superior's Myles Hektor had 36 saves.
The Pointers and Yellowjackets faceoff in game two of the semifinals on Saturday (Feb. 26). Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. at K.B. Willett Arena.
