ASHLAND, Wis. – The No. 10 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (18-5-1, 11-2-0) claimed its 15th WIAC regular season championship with a convincing 7-3 win at Northland (4-18-3, 1-13-1) on Saturday.
Fletcher Anderson (Thunder Bay, Ont.) started the scoring spree with a tally at the 8:25 mark of the first.
Conor Witherspoon (Metamora, Mich.) got the assist on the play.
Brady Smith (Bloomington, Ill.) doubled the advantage at 12:06 of the first. Anderson got his second point of the period with an assist. In the final minute of the period, NC cut the lead in half with a power-play goal.
Just 15 seconds into the second period,
Dawson Sciarrino (Greensburg, Pa.) gave the Pointers a two-goal lead again.
Brandon McReynolds (North Vancouver, B.C.) and Smith had helpers.
David Hill (Glen Mills, Pa.) upped the lead to 4-1 with a power-play goal at the 1:49 mark of the second.
Sam Ayd (Grant, Minn.) and
Tyler German (Canton, Mich.) had the assists.
Hill scored again at 11:40 of the second period, an unassisted goal that put the score at 5-2.
Jordan Fader (Rice Lake, Wis.) scored his first of the game in the final minute of the second period with McReynolds and
Connor Scahill (Port Huron, Mich.) getting assists.
Fader tallied another goal at 2:32 of the third period for a 7-2 lead. The Lumberjacks added a goal later in the period, but UWSP cruised to the win.
UWSP will play a rescheduled non-conference game at Hamline on Wednesday (Feb. 16) in the regular season finale. Puck drop is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. in St. Paul.
