STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Both goaltenders made phenomenal saves in overtime, the
Conor Witherspoon (Metamora, Mich.) was able to rip an overtime game-winner for No. 10 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey (16-5-1) in a 2-1 non-conference win over UW-Superior (12-9-2).
The visiting Yellowjackets struck first with the opening goal at 2:37 of the first period.
Jordan Fader (Rice Lake, Wis.) scored at 15:00 of the first period to tie the game, a shorthanded goal with
Wilson Northey (North Vancouver, B.C.) on the assist. It was Fader's seventh goal int eh last four games for the Pointers.
Goaltending became the story the remainder of regulation. UWSP goaltender
Eli Billing (Windsor, Ont.) had 10 saves in the second period and 19 for the game. UW-Superior netminder Myles Hektor had 12 second-period saves and 35 for the game.
Neither team was able to break the tie in regulation and the game headed to overtime. But 1:58 into the extra session, Witherspoon broke up the right side of the ice and shot one past Hektor for the game-winner.
UWSP heads out for three games to wrap up the regular season beginning with back-to-back conference games at Northland. Puck drop on Friday (Feb. 11) is set for 7:00 p.m. in Ashland.
