STEVENS POINT, Wis. – It took
Conor Witherspoon (Metamora, Mich./) just 12:24 to net three second-period goals as the No. 15 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (7-1-3, 5-0-0) took a 6-2 win over No. 14 UW-Eau Claire (7-4-0, 3-2-0) on Friday.
The visiting Blugolds got on the board first with a goal 3:59 into the game. Despite out-shooting UWEC 10-6 in the first period, UWSP trailed, 1-0, after one.
Witherspoon pulled UWSP even at 2:10 of the second period.
Evan Junker (Elk River, Minn./) picked up an assist, his third-straight game with at least one point.
At 7:18 of the second, Witherspoon put UWSP ahead with an unassisted tally. He completed his hat trick at 14:34 of the second with
Fletcher Anderson (Thunder Bay, Ont./Sir William Churchill) and
Harrison Stewart (Rockford, Ill./) picking up assists on the play.
Junker scored his third goal in as many games with an unassisted shorthanded tally at 5:04 of the third period. Anderson extended the UWSP lead to 5-1 at 11:35 of the third on a feed from
Jordan Fader (Rice Lake, Wis./).
The Pointers went ahead 6-1 as
David Hill (Glen Mills, Pa./) netted an unassisted goal at 13:07 of the third. UWEC added a power-play goal less than a minute later to complete the scoring.
Alex Proctor (Allen, Texas) made 19 saves to pick up his second win of the season and first in WIAC play. UWEC goaltender Max Gutjahr had 30 saves.
The Pointers and Blugolds conclude 2022 with the second of the weekend home-and-home in Eau Claire on Saturday (Dec. 10). Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. at Hobbs Ice Arena in Eau Claire.
