Pointers Use Big Second Quarter to Post Double-Digit Win at Luther

DECORAH, Iowa – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (7-2) out-scored host Luther (6-3) in the second quarter, 22-7, en route to a 63-52 win.

Freshman Emily Mortenson (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) notched her first double-figures scoring game of her career with 10 points, four of which came in the pivotal second quarter.

Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) led the Pointers in scoring with 15 points. Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) added 14 and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Kelly McIntyre (Waukesha, Wis./North) was also in double figures with 10.

Thomson got UWSP on the board as the Pointers faced an early 8-2 hole. Josie Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) and Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) each made a basket and a Mortenson three got UWSP within a possession late.

Gawlitta scored six points as the Pointers eked ahead, 21-20 midway through the second quarter. Mortenson and McIntyre had four points each as UWSP closed the half on a 20-3 run for a 33-21 lead.

Thomson scored the first points of the third quarter nearly half way though as UWSP maintained a lead. Mortenson buried her second three of the game and a late bucket by Thomson gave the Pointers a 48-39 lead heading to the fourth.

Olivia Hoerl (Chilton, Wis./Chilton) and Thomson nailed threes on back-to-back possession in the middle of the fourth to push the UWSP lead back to double digits where it remained the rest of the game.

The Pointers travel to Minnesota next Wednesday (Dec. 14) for a 7:00 p.m. game at Saint Mary's.
