WINONA, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (8-2) had four players in double figures, including
Alexa Thomson's (De Pere, Wis./West) third double-double of the season, in an 81-79 overtime win at Saint Mary's (2-5).
Thomson led the Pointers with 21 points. She added 10 rebounds for her second double-double in the last three games.
Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) tied her career high with 20 points.
Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) put up a season-high 15, 12 of which came in the first quarter.
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) rounded out the quartet of double-digit scorers with 14.
Krueger out-scored SMU by herself in the first quarter, 12-7, matching her season high in the first 10 minutes of play. Thomson added four points and Pfeifer had the other two as UWSP led, 18-7, after one.
Gawlitta had four early points as UWSP maintained a lead. Thomson hit a jumper with two minutes left in the half as the lead was down to three.
Olivia Hoerl (Chilton, Wis./Chilton) drilled a three and
Josie Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) made a bucket in the final seconds as UWSP was up, 31-28, at the half.
Pfeifer had UWSP's first eight points of the third quarter as the Cardinals built a nine-point lead. Gawlitta had four points late and UWSP trailed 55-49 heading to the fourth.
Nies had a layup as UWSP began to battle back from a nine-point deficit. Thomson buried a three to get UWSP within four. Pfeifer hit a three and Thomson tied the game at 62-62 with 2:31 remaining. Pfeifer pushed the lead to three with 27 second left and two free throws by Gawlitta gave UWSP a five-point lead with 20 seconds left. The Cardinals hit a game-tying three with 10 seconds left to send the game to overtime.
Pfeifer and Gawlitta each hit from behind the arc in overtime, but the game remained tied, 79-79, with 2:03 left. Thomson made a layup with 59 second remaining to break the tie as UWSP pulled out the overtime win.
UWSP will be home on Saturday (Dec. 17) for a 4:00 p.m. tip against Ripon.
