STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team (6-3-1) picked up a 3-1 home victory over non-conference opponent St. Catherine (7-3-1) on Tuesday at K.B. Willett Arena.
Freshman
Josie Bender (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) put the Pointers ahead at 7:33 of the first period with her second goal of the season.
Laina Berthiaume (South Haven, Minn./Hutchinson) had an assist on the play, her fifth helper in the last four games and sixth of the season.
Later in the period,
Courtney Leising (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) scored an unassisted goal on the power play. She wedged the puck loose at the far boards and sent a shot into the net at 11:27, her team-leading ninth tally of the year and the eventual game-winner.
Neither team scored in the second period. The Wildcats finally got of the board at 15:38 of the third period to make it a one-goal game.
Then in the closing seconds,
Maike Zipp (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) intercepted a pass on the forecheck and scored an empty-net goal with 10.8 seconds remaining to secure the win.
Olivia Schultz (Maplewood, Minn./Tartan) made 30 saves for the Pointers, moving into second in school history in the category and just eight saves shy of tying the school record. SCU goaltender Elizabeth Kubicek made eight saves.
The Pointers travel to Minnesota for a pair of non-conference tilts this weekend beginning on Friday (Dec. 9) at Augsburg. Puck drop is slated for 7:00 p.m.
