STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (6-1-3, 4-0-0) scored twice in the final 2:33 of regulation and pulled off an unbelievable 3-2 overtime win over UW-Superior (8-4-0, 4-2-0) on Saturday.
The visiting Yellowjackets took a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal at 5:10 of the first period. UWS came out of the locker room in the second and pushed the lead to 2-0 just eight seconds into the second period.
UWSP's defense clamped down and allowed just six shots on goal the remainder of regulation.
All the while, UWSP peppered the Yellowjackets' net with shots. Finally with 2:33 left in the third period,
Noah Finstrom (New Baltimore, Mich./) was able to redirect a shot into the net. His power-play tally came with an extra attacker as UWSP pulled goaltender
Ryan Wagner (Indianapolis, Ind./).
Nicholas Aromatario (Woodbridge, Ont./) and
David Hill (Glen Mills, Pa./) had assists on the play.
The Pointers again pulled Wagner in favor of an extra attacker with 2:15 left in regulation. With just 47.1 seconds remaining,
Evan Junker (Elk River, Minn./) netted his second goal in as many nights on a wrist shot from the blue line to tie the game.
Tyler German (Canton, Mich./) and
Fletcher Anderson (Thunder Bay, Ont./Sir William Churchill) assisted on the tying goal.
The game went to overtime and UWSP's pressure persisted. With 1:52 remaining in overtime,
Dawson Sciarrino (Greensburg, Pa./) deked the goaltender for a tap-in game-winner.
Jordan Fader (Rice Lake, Wis./) and
Evan Junker (Elk River, Minn./) assisted on the game-winner.
UWSP will close out 2022 with a home-and-home against UW-Eau Claire next weekend beginning on Friday at K.B. Willett Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m.
