Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Slow Start Spoils Slowik’s Career-High for the Pointers

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (9-4) got off to a slow start and were not able to rebound in an 85-58 loss to host Loras (10-2) in the Loras Tournament title game.

Junior Katelyn Slowik (Elcho, Wis./Elcho) became the second Pointer on the week to post a career-high. She scored 11 of her career-best 12 points in the second half, including a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the arc.

Olivia Hoerl (Chilton, Wis./Chilton) scored nine points and tied Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) for the team-lead with four rebounds.

Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) scored four early points to give UWSP a 4-2 lead just over a minute in. The host Duhawks would close the quarter on an 18-0 run to put the Pointers behind 20-4 after one.

Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) posted five early points in the second quarter. Thomson buried a three later in the quarter, but four three-pointers and 11 made free throws by Loras put UWSP down 43-19 at the half.

Slowik hit back-to-back threes near the midway point of the third as tried to chip away. Hoerl and Emily Mortenson (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) each hit late three-pointers, but the deficit stood at 70-39 heading to the fourth.

Thomson nailed a pair of threes in the fourth. Slowik drained her third of the game and added a layup to complete her career day. Kelly McIntyre (Waukesha, Wis./North) and Allie Spaltholz (South Milwaukee, Wis./South Milwaukee) each made a pair of free throws late.

The Pointers return to league play with a trip to UW-Whitewater on Wednesday (Jan. 4). Tip-off at UWW is set for 7:00 p.m.
