STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Sophomore
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) scored a career-high 22 points to lead the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (6-2, 1-1) to a 59-53 win over UW-Platteville (4-5, 1-1) on Saturday.
In addition to her game-high 22 points, Thomson pulled down a game-best 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) and
Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) were also in double-figures with 14 and 11, respectively.
Gawlitta buried a three for UWSP's first points and combined with Thomson in an 8-2 run by the Pointers for an early 8-4 lead. Pfeifer scored a late bucket and the teams were tied at 12-12 after one.
Olivia Hoerl (Chilton, Wis./Chilton) drilled a three-pointer to begin the second quarter and had five early points for a 19-14 advantage. Thomson hit two free throws in the closing seconds as UWSP took a 30-28 edge into halftime.
Thomson nailed two triples as UWSP opened the third quarter with a 14-3 run for a 44-31 lead. But the Pioneers scored the final seven points of the quarter.
Gawlitta scored four early points as UWSP extended the lead back to 11 at 49-38. Thomson scored five-straight and the UWSP lead with 54-44 with 2:24 to go.
Emily Mortenson (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) scored with 31 seconds remaining to put the game away.
UWSP will head out for a non-conference game at Luther on Wednesday (Dec. 7). Tip-off in Decorah, Iowa is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
