Pointers Trio in Double Figures in 2022 Home Finale

STEVENS POINT, Wis – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (8-3) had a trio of players in double figures as it closed the home slate for 2022 with a 62-51 loss to visiting Ripon (5-5).
 
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) led UWSP in scoring with 13 points. She just missed her fourth double-double of the year with a team-high nine rebounds. Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) with 11 and Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) with 10 points were also is double figures.
 
Thomson got UWSP on the board in the opening minute for a 2-0 lead. Pfeifer pushed the lead to three, 8-5, with a layup. A pair of free throws by Gawlitta put UWSP ahead, 10-9, with 4:08 left in the first. But a defensive struggle the rest of the quarter saw UWSP down, 11-10, after one.
 
Josie Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) scored the first four of her nine points in the game to put UWSP back in front, 20-19. Nies hit a pair of free throws and Kelly McIntyre (Waukesha, Wis./North) made a layup to tie the game at 26-26. The Red Hawks scored the final bucket of the half as UWSP trailed 28-26 at the break.
 
Thomson scored four early points in the third quarter as UWSP stayed close at 34-31. A jumper by Pfeifer cut the deficit to two and she scored again late, but UWSP was down 45-37 heading to the fourth.
 
Gawlitta scored four points as the Pointers got within four, 49-45, midway through the fourth. Three-pointers by Pfeifer and Thomson kept UWSP within striking distance until the final minute. Ripon hit all four free throws and the final six points to spoil UWSP's final home game of 2022.
 
The Pointers travel to Iowa on Dec. 29 and 30 for the Loras Tournament. UWSP's first game on the 29th is at 2:00 p.m. versus Wheaton.
