WHITEWATER, Wis. – The No. 15 UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (25-7) fell short in its bid to win the WIAC Tournament (presented by Culver's) in a four-set defeat at No. 12 UW-Whitewater (25-6).
Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) led all players with 18 kills and recorded her 24th double-double of the season with 10 digs.
Grace Michalske (Wausau, Wis./West) just must a double-double with 33 assists and nine digs.
Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) and
Kelsie Belfiori (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) tied for the team-lead with 19 digs apiece.
Kopp had two early kills in the first set, but a 6-1 run by UWW gave the hosts a 6-4 lead.
Melanie Meyer (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) had two kills to spark at 5-1 run by UWSP, but even a late ace by Belfiori wasn't enough as UWSP dropped the first set, 25-20.
Kopp and Meyer combined for five kills as the teams played to an early 9-9 tie in the second set. The Warhawks used a 9-1 run to seize control, 20-11. Kopp had six kills late to get UWSP within 24-22 in the 25-22 setback.
In the third set, Kopp capped a 4-0 burst to pull UWSP back to a 5-5 tie. A 7-1 run pushed UWSP in front 17-16. Kopp and
Katie Larson (Hammond, Wis./St. Croix Central) combined for five kills as UWSP took the third set, 25-23.
Larson had two early kills in the fourth, but UWW burst in front, 16-5. Meyer added two kills and
Olivia Paukner (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) had a kill as the Warhawks closed out the match with a 25-13 fourth set win.
The Pointers will await Monday's selection show to find out their postseason fate. The selection show can be seen on NCAA.com at 12:00 p.m. on Monday (Nov. 7).
