SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The No. 14 UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (26-7) swept No. 21 Coe (27-6) in Thursday's NCAA Tournament First Round at the Saint Paul Regional.
Sophomore
Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) recorded her 25th double-double of the season with 14 kills and 12 digs. Freshman
Melanie Meyer (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) tied Kopp for the game-high with 14 kills, three of which were set clinchers.
Senior
Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) led all players with 21 digs. She moved into second all-time in program history now with 2,180 in her career. Peterson has 634 on the season, a new career high.
Grace Michalske (Wausau, Wis./West) had a match-high 41 assists. She now has 1,210 for the season, the eighth-highest single season.
Sydney Mosinski (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) had three kills and
Katie Larson (Hammond, Wis./St. Croix Central) added two as UWSP went ahead 12-6 in the first set. Kopp and Larson had two kills each and Larson served up an ace as UWSP used a 7-3 run to take a 20-14. Kopp had two more kills and Meyer finished the set with a kill, 25-22.
The Pointers burst in front 8-2 to open the second set with Kopp posting three kills and Michalske serving up an ace. Mosinski and Meyer combined for seven kills and Larson served two aces in a 10-1 run to put UWSP up 20-9. Kopp and Meyer each had a late kill as UWSP took the second set, 25-20.
Kopp had two kills and combined on a block with
Olivia Paukner (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) as UWSP jumped up 4-1 early. The Pointers fell behind 7-5 and then Meyer posted four kills in an 12-2 run as UWSP gained a 18-10 lead. Coe battled back to within 21-18 before Meyer recorded three kills in a 4-1 run to take the third set, 25-19.
UWSP advances to the regional semifinal and will face either host No. 4 Northwestern or North Park at 7:00 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 11).
