STEVENS POINT, Wis. – A night after making his collegiate debut, freshman Matthias Smith made the most of his first career start as the No. 12 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (1-1-2) earned a 2-1 win over visiting St. Scholastica (1-3-0).
Smith made 24 saves for the Pointers, 22 of which came after the lone goal by the visitors.
The Saints took the lead at 4:38 of the first period on a deflection in front of Smith off a shot from the blue line.
At almost the same time in the second period,
Andrew Poulias (Whitby, Ont./) pulled the Pointers even. His goal at 4:24 came off an assist from
Jordan Fader (Rice Lake, Wis./).
At the 7:15 mark of the second,
David Hill (Glen Mills, Pa./) gave the Pointers the lead.
Tyler German (Canton, Mich./) and
Matthew Falls (Toronto,Ont./) had assists on the eventual game-winning goal.
The Pointers fired 39 shots at CSS goaltender Jack Bostedt and he made 37 saves.
UWSP heads to Minnesota for a pair of non-conference game next weekend beginning with a 2:00 p.m. game at Saint Mary's on Friday (Nov. 11).
