Pointers Drop League Opener on Late Surge by Stout

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (5-2, 0-1) fell in the league opener on Wednesday, 64-58, to visiting UW-Stout (4-1, 1-0).
 
Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) led the Pointers in scoring with 15 points. Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) added nine with Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill), Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) and Kelly McIntyre (Waukesha, Wis./North) contributing eight points each. Gawlitta had a team-high eight rebounds.
 
Thomson and Gawlitta gave UWSP an early 4-0 lead with a bucket each. Krueger made a layup and UWSP held a 10-7 edge midway through the first. Josie Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) and Olivia Hoerl (Chilton, Wis./Chilton) each made a bucket as the Pointers trailed 18-16 after one.
 
Nies and Pfeifer scored on consecutive possessions as UWSP closed to within 22-20 in the second. Katelyn Slowik (Elcho, Wis./Elcho) hit a layup to spark a 7-1 run by UWSP to end the half. McIntyre had three points down the stretch and UWSP was down just one, 30-29, at the break.
 
Pfeifer and Gawlitta each made early baskets as the run hit 11-1 three minutes into the third. Thomson scored five straight and a Gawlitta layup pushed the UWSP lead to 11, 44-33. McIntyre made a late layup and the pointers held a 46-37 advantage heading to the fourth.
 
Hoerl made a jumper early in the fourth and a Gawlitta layup put UWSP ahead by two possessions. The Blue Devils rallied for a 54-53 lead until Pfeifer nailed a triple with 2:24 to go. Stout answered back with a three and ended the game on a 10-2 run for the win.
 
The Pointers remain at home to face UW-Platteville on Saturday (Dec. 3). Tip-off at Shirley Egner Court at Berg Gym is set for 3:00 p.m. as the Pointers wrap up a five-game homestand.
