OSHKOSH, Wis. – The No. 15 UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (25-6) are headed to the WIAC Championship match after a five-set win at No. 6 UW-Oshkosh. The Pointers rallied from down a set twice and snapped UWO's 18-match win streak to advance to UWSP's seventh title match appearance.
Newly minted WIAC Offensive Player of the Year
Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) posted her 23rd double-double of the year and led all players with 26 kills. She added 28 digs, her third double-double with at least 20 kills and digs.
Grace Michalske (Wausau, Wis./West) notched a career-high 55 assists and racked up her 14th double-double of the season with 13 digs.
Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) led all players with 37 digs.
Kelsie Belfiori (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) and
Katie Albrecht (West Bend, Wis./East) were also in double figures with 23 and 17 digs, respectively.
A seesaw first set saw the Pointers take a 12-10 lead following an
Erin Gillen (Richfield, Wis./Slinger) ace. Following a 4-0 burst by the Titans, a
Melanie Meyer (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) kill pulled UWSP even at 17-17. Kopp and
Olivia Paukner (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) combined for a block to make it 22-22. The Pointers got a kill from
Megan Schroder (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) to thwart set point and Kopp served an ace to knot the set at 24-all. Meyer gave UWSP set point with another kill, but the Titan reeled off three-straight for a 27-25 win.
Sydney Mosinski (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) served up an ace and Kopp had two kills as UWSP opened the second with a 7-2 lead. Meyer had two kills in an 8-2 run as the advantage grew to 16-9. Three kills by Kopp down the stretch leveled the match as UWSP secured the second set, 25-13.
Kopp had four kills and an ace in the third set. Schroder had three kills as well, but the Titans took the third set, 25-18.
Kopp had two kills and a block as the Pointers began the fourth in front, 5-1. The Titans battled back in front and kills by Kopp and Schroder tied the set at 10- and 13-all, respectively. Kopp had a personal 5-1 run to put UWSP back ahead, 22-20. She added a block and Meyer had a late kill as UWSP forced a fifth set with a 25-23 win.
Meyer gave UWSP its first lead at 4-3 in the fifth with a kill. She added another kill to push the lead to 8-5. Kopp rattled off four kills to make it 13-10. After UWO tied it at 13-13, Meyer posted kills for the final three points as UWSP prevailed, 16-14.
The Pointers advance to Saturday's title match at UW-Whitewater. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. with the winner receiving the WIAC's automatic bid into next week's NCAA Tournament.
