STEVENS POINT, Wis. –
Jake Buchanan's (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) three-pointer with 0.6 seconds remaining capped a 13-0 run to end the game as the UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (4-1) came back to beat Wisconsin Lutheran (2-3) by a 60-59 final.
With his game-winning three, Buchanan led all scorers with 15 points. He also tied for the team-lead with six rebounds.
Zach Mootz (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) was also in double-figures with 11 points and also had six boards.
Mootz and
Ryan Peterson (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) each had an early three as the teams sparred back and forth for the lead. Mootz converted a fast break for a 15-14 lead near the midway point of the first half.
Buchanan hit his first three of the night amid a personal 8-0 run, but UWSP couldn't create any separation.
Josiah Gillie (Milwaukee, Wis./West Allis) scored five points late as the Pointers took a 33-31 advantage to halftime.
A Peterson bucket interrupted a 16-2 run by WLC to open the second half before hit a three.
Ryan Genrich (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) converted an and-one as UWSP got within 49-45 in the middle of the second half.
Myles Coleman (Milwaukee, Wis./Brookfield Central) had UWSP's only bucket in a 10-2 WLC run as the visitors lead 59-47 with 3:43 remaining.
Landon VanCalster (Freedom, Wis./Freedom) buried a three and Coleman followed with one of his own. Coleman and Buchanan each scored to get UWSP within two with a minute to go. Then with just 0.6 seconds left, Buchanan buried the dagger three to cap the 13-0 run for the win.
The Pointers travel to Michigan on Saturday (Nov. 26) for a 3:00 p.m. ET tip-off at Calvin.
